This year’s judges are multi-faceted artists PETER MONACELLI, and KATHY ARMSTRONG. By trade, Monacelli is a well-known artist, but he is also a carpenter, teacher, contractor, musician and philosopher. He has been involved with many downtown Rochester renovations, including the Little Theater and the rehearsal space for the Bucket Dance Theater. As an artist, Peter primarily works with drawing media. He has been recognized and respected as a “patron of the arts” for his commitment to the arts and his volunteer work for nonprofit agencies. He was inducted into the Monroe Community College Alumni Hall of Fame in 2012 and is listed in Who's Who Among Students in American Universities and Colleges. He has had more than 50 one-person art shows and received many artistic awards including the SUNY Empire State College Award for Outstanding Contributions to the Arts, 2015. He has taught art at MCC where he was promoted to adjunct assistant professor in 2003. Trained in the visual and graphic arts, Armstrong grew up in upstate NY. She is primarily self-taught in watercolor, but has studied under Colorado artist, Julia Jordan. She is also skilled in acrylic, oil, and plein air painting, especially painting in the Finger Lakes area. Trying to capture light, whether intense or subtle, is the driving force behind her love of creating art. Kathy shows her work regionally and nationally. She won the Alice E. Koret Award for her watercolor at the MAG’s Finger Lakes Exhibit. In honor of recently deceased members, Dean Joy, Doris Sauter, Marlyn Mosca and Fran Mascari, there will be a special memorial exhibit. The newly created Mascari Awards to be given this year are named after Fran. Artist awards will be presented during the Opening Reception on Thursday, April 16 from 7 to 8:45 PM. As in previous years, there will be a “Meet the Artists Day” on Saturday, April 18, beginning at 1 PM. Several artists will speak for up to 10 minutes about their entries and field questions. This will be a unique opportunity to gain insights into the artist’s process in terms of inspiration, artistic journey, background, and techniques.
