This year’s judges are multi-faceted artists PETER MONACELLI, and KATHY ARMSTRONG. By trade, Monacelli is a well-known artist, but he is also a carpenter, teacher, contractor, musician and philosopher. He has been involved with many downtown Rochester renovations, including the Little Theater and the rehearsal space for the Bucket Dance Theater. As an artist, Peter primarily works with drawing media. He has been recognized and respected as a “patron of the arts” for his commitment to the arts and his volunteer work for nonprofit agencies. He was inducted into the Monroe Community College Alumni Hall of Fame in 2012 and is listed in Who's Who Among Students in American Universities and Colleges. He has had more than 50 one-person art shows and received many artistic awards including the SUNY Empire State College Award for Outstanding Contributions to the Arts, 2015. He has taught art at MCC where he was promoted to adjunct assistant professor in 2003. Trained in the visual and graphic arts, Armstrong grew up in upstate NY. She is primarily self-taught in watercolor, but has studied under Colorado artist, Julia Jordan. She is also skilled in acrylic, oil, and plein air painting, especially painting in the Finger Lakes area. Trying to capture light, whether intense or subtle, is the driving force behind her love of creating art. Kathy shows her work regionally and nationally. She won the Alice E. Koret Award for her watercolor at the MAG’s Finger Lakes Exhibit. In honor of recently deceased members, Dean Joy, Doris Sauter, Marlyn Mosca and Fran Mascari, there will be a special memorial exhibit. The newly created Mascari Awards to be given this year are named after Fran. Artist awards will be presented during the Opening Reception on Thursday, April 16 from 7 to 8:45 PM. As in previous years, there will be a “Meet the Artists Day” on Saturday, April 18, beginning at 1 PM. Several artists will speak for up to 10 minutes about their entries and field questions. This will be a unique opportunity to gain insights into the artist’s process in terms of inspiration, artistic journey, background, and techniques.

NOTE: Irondequoit Art Club announces cancellation of the March 24 business meeting and speaker (Dejan Pejovic) which had been scheduled at Chapel Oaks at 7pm. Cancellaion is due to precautions being taken during the corona-virus situation. Rochester sculptor and art instructor, DEJAN PEJOVIC, will present a slideshow entitled “Artistic Creativity, Processes, Themes and Trends” at the Tuesday, March 24, 2020 meeting of the Irondequoit Art Club to be held 7:30 PM at Chapel Oaks, St. Ann’s Community, 1550 Portland Ave., Rochester, NY 14621, after the club’s 7 PM business meeting. Dejan will present a bit of his past work with a greater focus on his most recent projects and will talk about his creative process, themes and current trends in art. He currently teaches ceramic and figure sculpture, observational drawing and relief sculpture at the Memorial Art Gallery’s Creative Workshop. He will encourage questions about his work, and since he presently teaches drawing will also welcome discussion of that facet of his experience. Dejan had a European infused background which contributed to his aesthetic outlook. His family settled in Irondequoit when he was 10 years old after much moving around. Since he was good with his hands, he naturally gravitated to making things. Art was the family business. His father had a background in graphic design and opened a gallery. Dejan and his sister, Lanna, a painter, encouraged each other in their artistic endeavors. Dejan studied art in Rochester, London and Toronto. He settled back here in 1981 and has been working and teaching here ever since. He currently works mostly with clay. He can be contacted at [email protected] RIT art instructor and teaching artist, GRETCHEN ETTLIE, will deliver a talk entitled “From Rochester to Macau to Summerville” at the February 25, 2020 meeting of the Irondequoit Art Club to be held 7:30 PM at Chapel Oaks, St. Ann’s Community, 1550 Portland Ave., Rochester, NY 14621, after the club’s 7 PM business meeting. Gretchen is a 2D mixed media artist and an art teacher with a creative spirit, an adventurous soul, and an affinity for cats. She grew up in Michigan, crossed the Great Lakes to study graphic design and art education at RIT from which she holds a BFA in Graphic Design, 2002. Choosing to engage in an arts career in a more meaningful way, she graduated from RIT with a Master of Science in Teaching (MST, 2004) and became credentialed to teach art K-12. She traveled to the other side of the world to teach art at the School of the Nations in Macau, China. After spending 11 years as an educator in “The Las Vegas of Asia,” Gretchen is happy to be back in Irondequoit close to family. She enjoys long walks on the beach (literally—she lives near the Lake Ontario shoreline), and she shares her home with her two beloved souvenirs from Macau—her cats, Bobo and Nicho. Starting in the fall of 2019, she went back to school again—working on a Master of Fine Arts at RIT. Gretchen will address the club on her eleven-year tenure teaching art in China as well as the cultural highlights that she experienced there. Kathy grew up in upstate NY, but after getting a degree in Visual Arts in Pittsburgh, spent most of her adult life working as a graphic designer in Wisconsin. She met her husband and they raised their family while working together in their own communications firm in Madison (with a few years in Colorado). In the early years Kathy dabbled in fine art when she could find the time, but after having their second child and taking a break from design, she tried painting in watercolor and found she really loved it. Kathy is primarily self-taught in that medium, although a few years later she learned much from Colorado artist, Julia Jordan. After a decade or so painting exclusively in watercolor, Kathy took up acrylic and oil painting as well. She began painting en plein air a few years ago and enjoys painting out in the beauty of the Finger Lakes area, although she thinks of herself as primarily a studio artist. “Light touches the world and immediately brings it to life. It shapes and forms everything in its path. Trying to capture that light, whether intense or subtle, is the driving force behind my love of creating art.” Kathy shows her work regionally and nationally and has been represented by galleries in the Midwest as well as New York State. Last summer she won the Alice E. Koret Award for her watercolor, “Fresh Squeezed OJ,” at the MAG’s Finger Lakes Exhibit. Kathy teaches watercolor classes at various locations. She and ten other regional artists have just opened Pittsford Fine Art at 4 N. Main Street in Pittsford. She and her husband currently live in Rochester. She can be contacted at phone, 608-445-2241; email, [email protected]; website, www.kathyarmstrongfineart.com In this Nocturne Workshop will discuss logistics of plein air painting at night and how to get started. This presentation will be followed by a demonstration. Working from your provided source images, I’ll then guide you through the nocturne painting process. You will need to bring everything normally needed for painting inside or outside.
